Baptized in Fedamore Parish, Limerick, Ireland on September 7, 1821. His godparents were Michael Blackwell and Margaret Enright [as per Source letter]. His mother's last name is listed as "Burton."
He was the Superintendent of Street Lighting (gas lamps) for the City of Somerville, MA (USA) from about 1858 until his death in 1883.
Boston Traveler, August 26, 1863, Page 2: MURDEROUS ASSAULT IN OLD CAMBRIDGE -- At half past nine o'clock last evening Mr. Roger Cough, a private watchman at the Union Railway stables, was set upon by two men, named Hugh Blackwell and Michael Grady, of Somerville, while on duty at the stables, and severely injured about the head, from blows administered with metallic knuckles and a billy loaded with lead. Dr. Brown was called to dress Mr. Cough's wounds. Blackwell and Grady were arrested, and held in $1000 each, to appear on Saturday next. They were unable to furnish bail, and were committed to jail. An old grudge seems to have been the cause of the attack. Blackwell is well known as a brawler, and has been concerned in affairs of the kind before.
Cambridge Chronicle, August 29, 1863, Page 2: AN AGGRAVATED ASSAULT was committed on Tuesday evening last, on the person of Robert Cough, the private watchman at the Union Railway Stables, in Old Cambridge. He was severely injured about the head by blows administered with metallic knuckles and a loaded billy. The affair originated in an old quarrel. The assailants -- Hugh Blackwell and Michael Grady of Somerville - have heen arrested, and held in default of bail in $1000 each for further examination this morning.
He was Naturalized at Boston February 29, 1856; see USDC Boston Cert. # 19 - 15; states he was born in Ireland on 15 Sep 1827.
Who was Hugh's first wife? On his marriage record to Honora Ford it indicates that this was his second marriage. Did his first wife die? If so, in the USA or in Ireland?
