James was born abt 1799 in Dublin. He married Bridget Towers in 1822 in Ireland. She was born in1804 in Cork. James' parents were James Barber and Bridget Whalen. Bridget's parents were Lawrence Towers and Dora Dillon. James served with the 17th Regiment of Foot. He embarked at Chatham on 21 June 1830 on the convict ship "Burrell" which arrived in New South Wales on 23 December 1830. He was discharged from the Army in February 1836. James and Bridget settled in New South Wales. He became a constable at a number of different places. James and Bridget had 10 children. He died on 16 October 1886 in Glebe, Sydney Australia. Bridget died on 5 September 1879 in Parramatta Sydney Australia.
