James was born in Clashmore in 1829 to James Barry and Mary Keating (who married at Clashmore in 1818).
James enlisted into the East India Company Artillery at Dungarven on Feb 13th 1849 and signed his Attestaion on Feb 15th. After being posted to Warley in Essex for training he sailed to India aboard the "Persia" from London on April 11th 1849 and arrived at Calcutta during July 1849. He was recorded as unmarried.
He was serving at Rawul Pindee when his wife (Mary Barry) gave birth to a daughter Margaret during June 1859. After being absorbed into the British Army during 1860, he returned to Waterford in 1870 where he resided on Newport Lane and Barrack Street. James died at waterford in May 1899. in
