We know from his obituary that James came from Kilworth and was born around 1808. I am not sure which year he emigrated but I found his marriage record in NYC in 1839. He married a young widow named Elizabeth Miles who had a son named John Miles. James ran a Fancy Goods store at 50 Grand Street in Manhattan so he might have come from a family involved in tailoring. According to his will when he died in NYC in 1877, he had no living children. His stepson John Miles took on the name of John Courtney Miles and that name has passed on down through the generations. My husband will not show any DNA match to the Courtneys since he was the stepfather.
