James Cunningham 1802

Back to List

James was born in about 1802 but records of his age vary greatly. His parents were Thomas and Mary O'Neil, his father was a farmer. He married Margaret McGinlay in Glasgow on 23 January 1846. She was much younger than him. They lived in Tollcross and had at least 9 children. I am a descendant of their youngest son William.I would love to find out more about the Cunningham family of Knockbride but realise that it will be difficult to prove relationships back this far.

Additional Information
Date of Birth 1st Jan 1802 (circa)
Date of Death 15th Apr 1894

  • So we are related, I have previously been in contact with descendants of Thomas and Mary Anne. We may have communicated previously. Interestingly, I only have 13 children for Thomas and Mary Anne, not sure who I have missed out! I am still trying to trace the Cunningham family in Knockbride. I was all set to visit in March but obviously that didn't happen due to the pandemic. I don't suppose you have any information relating to Ireland?

  • Going back to Thomas Cunningham and Mary Reilly Im sure you might already know about there other children their so being Thomas Cunningham born about 1811 and died 7 apr 1885 in Scotland. And another son Patrick Cunningham born about 1811 and died 30 jul 1867 in Scotland and their youngest son owen Cunningham 1821 in cavan Ireland and died 26 apr 1896 in Scotland . Thomas Cunningham and mary Reilly also had two daughters mary Cunningham I can't find and records of at present. But their old daughter bridget Cunningham was born in mullingar westmeath Ireland on 23 mar 1800 . I do have a list of Cunningham descendants ive tried to keep in the family tree. My thoughts are to discover more about Thomas Cunningham and Mary Reilly life its through their daughter bridget Cunningham if its possible to trace any records on bridget Cunningham .

  • Very interesting, I was aware of Patrick, Owen and Thomas. I had assumed they were half brothers to James because the only record I have of his parents lists them as Thomas Cunningham and Mary O'Neil, whereas Patrick, Owen and Thomas have a mother called Mary Reilly. I was not aware of any sisters so i am very interested in Bridget and Mary. All my informations comes from my own research. My father had very limited information on the family and where they came from, he was born in Tollcross in 1922 and died in 2012. Are you able to work from personal memories of our descendant?

I have a birth record of Catherine, daugher of James and Margaret, which lists James' place of birth as Knockbride. Since then I have found baptism records for five of Patricks children in Kingscourt, Cavan.

I have been looking for tithe records for Thomas Cunningham but have struggled to match him to an exact location. There is a possible Thomas Cunnegan in Tullywaltry in 1827. Tullywaltry appears to be in Knockbride parish. Cunnegan could be a possible irish spelling of Cunningham but it's a long shot without further evidence. By 1856 there is a Philip Cunningham farming in Tullywaltry. He was married to Anne Smith and had at least 5 children Mary b. 1856, Bridget b. 1859, Catherine b. 1861, Thomas b. 1868, Philip b. 1870. Interesting that there is a Bridget, I know that she moved to Australia and married a Gaffney. Philip died young. Mary I have no further records on. Catherine and Thomas were living with their father in 1901 but I have lost them shortly after Philip died. I know Catherine married Bernard Cooney in 1903. They may have nothing to do with our family but I thought I'd see if any of therse names mean anything to you.

The only thing I have to help is the naming pattern used by the Irish at this time. Interesting that James, Patrick, Owen, Thomas and Philip all had a daughter named Catherine, but I guess that was a common name in those days. In 1856 there is a Catherine Cunningham renting a small area of land from Philip so I assumed she was an aunt or maybe an unmarried sister.
