James Flavelle was born in Co Cavan to James Flavelle - a farmer then later a policeman ( b1793-) and Ann.  He was ? educated by an Irish priest, worked as an accountant in the sugar trade in the West Indies.   In 1851 James married Frances McDonald in the Registary Office in Dublin. Frances died on 16th January 1854 aged 20years and is buried in Glasnevin  Cemetery- Garden section, Dublin.   On 27th February 1857 James married Elizabeth Haughton ( b. 1826 ) in the Registery Office in Dublin. They had a daughter Charlotte in 1858 and in 1859 they travelled to Victoria, Australia. Five more children were born - John in 1860, Mary 1862, Anna Marie 1865, George 1867 and Emily 1871. James died aged 55years from broncho pneumonia on 16th September 1885 at Collingwood, Victoria, Australia and is buried in the C of E section of the General Melbourne Cemetery.   Elizabeth moved to New South Wales to live with Charlotte, George and Emily after the death of James and she died on 20th July 1902 and is buried in the Presbyterian section of the General Cemetery Waverly, N.S.W.
