The information I have is that he was born in 1719 near Newry. OR 1690 in Antrim. James immigrated from the Ulster Plantation in Ireland as a young child. The family was from the Lowlands (Scotland) but joined the agricultural project in Ulster before migrating. Baptized 22 Jul 1739 • Kirkmahoe, Dumfries, Scotland. Emigrated: moved to Old District 96, SC. and married Hannah's sister of Michael Woods, Jr. It is assumed James and Michael made the journey back to Va. for the weddings. Died 6 Sep 1802 • Abbeville, Abbeville, South Carolina, United States.
The US data is fairly accurate, but I have no verifiable information from Ireland. There is a story of 7 brothers coming to the US.
There is another version of his name? James IMM Cowan. I have no idea what the IMM stands for.
I am looking for more verifiable information on the Irish history and family. I also have some information that the family was in Rosscommon.
