  • Hello Helen and Doreen,
How lovely to stumble across your outreach. I am a grandchild of James Joseph Collins and Annie Monaghan. However, my mum was a "late" baby (born when nanna Annie Collins was 42) and when her dad (the same James Joseph Collins) died days after his motorcycle vs car accident when my mum was 7 (about 1938), nanna Annie struggled financially with four adult sons to support. So she was persuaded to supposedly"adopt" my mum out to a man and woman from another state a long way away. The woman made sure my mum did not have contact with her Irish family, so mum was only able to track down her real family when she was about 18, had left home from that 'supoosedly adopted' family and married my dad and still lived in that town so far away from her real family. Therefore, my own knowledge of James Joseph and his family is limited to what I learned while growing up a long way away from the Irish family, albeit with visits and constant communication between my mum and those families, mainly through my (favourite) uncle Martin, aka Bluey because of his red hair. Anyway I have written out all that I know and would like to send it to you but given that it contains information about living family, I would prefer to send it to you by email if that's O.K. Is it safe to post my email address as a comment or is there a more private way I can send you my email address and the Australian family history of James Joseph that I have written out for you?
Very kind regards from Lesley Jones (nee Window, daughter of Josephine Elizabeth Collins daughter of James Joseph C)

  • Hi Lesley

Hope I don’t wake you as I am not sure of the time difference.

Myself and Helen were delighted to hear from you. I am giving you my Email address and we can keep in contact that way preferably.

James was our Nana Cecilia (Ciss) brother and your mams name is after 2 of his other sisters Josephine and Elizabeth. Cecilia had 4 children one of them a son Lesley so names do have a habit of coming full circle.

My Email is doreensmith52@hotmail.com. Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Lots of love from Dublin.

    Yours sincerely

  • Hello Heather and Doreen and Helen,
What a lovely surprise to welcome you Heather, even though this whole serendipitous blessing is solely due to the amazing efforts of Helen and Doreen (thank you both Helen and Doreen again and again and again!).
Yes Heather, my mum spoke very fondly of you when she met you.
It's so lovely to connect with all of you despite the stresses and strains that break these strong family bonds.
Helen and Doreen, here in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, I think we are about 10 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time so we sleep while you are awake and vice versa. At least I think that is approximately the time difference (I think Ireland is very roughly about 12 or 13 hours behind Brisbane) . However, please don't ever worry about waking me because I don't use the phone or internet like most people do. I only turn it on when it suits me. So you are always very welcome to post comments to me anytime and I WILL try to respond but I don't get much spare time.
And once again, welcome to Heather. I think my mum will have already shared with you far more family history memories than even what she has shared with me incidentally over the years. I have researched family history since before I was 30 (I will be 70 in September).
    Most contemporary descendants
are not interested until they reach their later years. I am very happy to share any family history I have or that I can research, however I think I have far less to contribute than my mother or my cousins (Kerry Collins - Martin's daughter, and Veronica - Jim's youngest daughter) will have. My mother and these cousins have been meeting recently to share family history and memories. So please feel welcome to contact them directly (I don't have their contact details sorry.) However, I don't have any of that information.
Hugs to all of you and your families.

  • Hello Helen, Doreen and Heather,
Further to my recent comment above, here is a screenshot from Familysearch of my cousin (oops, OUR cousin Kerry Collins Genealogy (on Familysearch) showing the details we know about James Joseph Collins' wife, our grandmother, Anne Collins (nee Monaghan) b. about 1891 Galway. Of particular relevance is that cousin Kerry only submitted this Genealogy to Familysearch about 2 months ago, so the information will be far more current and accurate than the vague info that I can offer. Also, it gives you an avenue to contact her more directly through Familysearch - which will save delays in me trying to track down her contact details for you (which I cannot get easily through other avenues). She is lovely (they all are) and I am sure she will be really thrilled to connect with you, not only because (I think) like me, she was unable to trace James Joseph Collins' history back beyond his parents but more importantly to connect with our Irish family. So I will try to attach here a screenshot (not sure how to do this) of her details on her Familysearch Genealogy so you can contact her faster. I hope this helps you all. Kind regards from Lesley (nee Window)

  • Hi Lesley and Heather

So delighted that we all have finally managed to find each other half a world away.

Doreen is the main ‘librarian’ of the family documents and she is planning to share all the information that we have gathered to date.

So far we have not found any criminals, celebrities or unclaimed inheritance (only joking) while researching but it’s wonderful to find a bunch of cousins with the same interests in tracing our family roots.

If any of you are on Facebook send an email to Doreen and we can link up on that platform too.

    Stay safe and well.

  • Hello Ladies

Lesley Heather and Kerry hope you are all keeping well. Please accept my appoligies for no messages getting to you but I did send information  but unfortunatly I  was only sending to Helen and she thought i was just checking with her so none of you got any information at all. Thats what happens when you get old ( haha). Idont know how to send but I promise I will find a way.I know you know of Helen and myself Doreen (Dorothy Cecilia) after my mam and grandmother. We also have a sister Philomena (Phil) and a brother William (Liam). Phil helps with practical stuff with us like visiting graveyards and the research in records offices.

How extraordinary that we are not only joining family in Austrailia from Ireland but our Austrailian family are joining with each other also. I want to send info but i have a lot of birth baptismal marriage and death certs so I am sending a summerised written account starting with 1790 with the oldest person we found and work forward as I think it would be easier to follow.

Will try send attachment after this note.

Lots of love to all Doreen

  • Hello Doreen and all cousins,
Thank you Doreen for wanting to share so much really valuable family history. I remember in 1982 when I took my mum to Ireland, I spent a lot of money getting certificates, based on my mum's very sketchy knowledge, but all to no avail. (But one of the 'ushers' at the Four Courts pulled a button from his uniform coat and gave it to me as a souvenir. I still have it 40 years on. It has a harp on it.) Anyway, what you intend sharing with us is information that I reckon none of us would be able to track down otherwise. So Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.
And please don't apologies for not keeping in touch or not being able to to send us your information. We all have lives outside family history and be we all do our best to share our info. It's just so lovely to know that you are all "out there" and that you all feel the family bonds that I feel. (So please pass on hugs to Helen, Phil and Liam from all of us here.
I am OK with technology but I deliberately reject it most of the time because it steals my time that I prefer to spend saving Australian wildlife here, so that's where my focus always has been and it takes up most of my time. It's inconvenient, dirty, sometimes dangerous, often heartbreaking and keeps me poor (especially the cost of fuel, e.g. a 400 kms round trip a few weeks ago and the poor baby kngaroo joey ended up dying but he got the best chance at life that we volunteers could manage) but I know this is what I am meant to do AND I am good at it.
However I will do my best to keep in touch and to help in any way that I can.
(That's why I have given you Kerry's contact - so I don't delay the flow in information between all of us because I am often uncontactable) and I am so glad that Heather has connected with us all.
Anyway, it's almost 11pm here now, so I am off to bed - I have to be up at 6am tomorrow to go to the airport. So goodnight to you all and I am sending you big hugs. Kind regards from Lesley

  • Hello Doreen, Helen, Lesley and Kerry

    How lucky are we!

Thank you so much to you all for willingly sharing your information - I hadn’t got further than James, father of James and father of that James! So to get all the added info is beyond exciting!

We are so fortunate these days to be able to reach out via technology - imagine if we were waiting for info to travel the world via snail mail!

To me, it is very exciting to find biological rellies, to become part of a family group that shares the same roots. I do hope we can continue to communicate

The timing of your initial communication was quite interesting - I am involved with Genealogy Sunshine Coast - the family history group near where I live. We have a life member who has done a lot of work with Irish records, and it was she who suggested I connect with Ireland Reaching Out. My main reason for wanting to start getting involved, is that I am actually planning to visit Ireland and Wales in March/ April 2023, and I wanted as much background information as possible, and then suddenly, here comes Doreen, Lesley and Helen! Kerry and I have met on a few occasions, and she has kindly shares photos, information and some very special family keepsakes, which are very special

Lesley - you are one busy lady!

Love to you all, and so many thank you’d!

    Heather
