James Kays was from Letteragh, Kilmaley, the son of Thomas Kays. His first wife was Bridget Neylon,by whom he had Patrick, born 1840, John 1842, and James 1845. During the Famine period he left - or was evicted - and moved to the Houghton le Spring area in Durham, England. He married Mary Durkin and had further children, including my great grandmother Mary Ann Kays, born 1860. His son Patrick came first to join him in Houghton le Spring, then emigrated to America and settled in Wisconsin.
