    Arrived in Sept in New Zealand on the Basque Princess a 464 ton vessel,which was owned by Taylor and Watt and sailed under Captain Huntly. The cargo was whiskey and brandy and the trip took 6 months and 5 days. The NZ Spectator recorded arrival Wellington

    James would have been 19 years of age and worked on a farm owned by his mothers Uncle whose name was McGrath?? He evidently offered or gave him the deeds of the farm but after having an argument with his great Uncle tore them up.

    He fought in the Kai Iwi Calvery where he served under Captain J Bryce in the Maori Wars defending Waitotara, Maxwell, Waverley, Patea and Hawere in the Defence of the Weraroa Redoubt.

    At some stage he lived (or the family) lived in an old homestead near the entrance to "Riverton". Mr Reid almost sacked James when he allowed some of the precious gorse plants destined for gorse hedges to die.
