Back to List

Family tradition says that James Millay/Mille/Millea/Melee/Mallee/Millett was born in County Kilkenny in 1755. We do not know a town or parish.

He was 14 years-old when he "ran away from home" to the new world, landing in Harpswell, Maine.  Again, this is congecture.  He, more likely, landed in Boston or St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, according to a genealogist who specializes in New England and Irish ancestry.  We do not know who he might have immigrated with; we do not know if family was waiting for him; we only know that he was, in fact, in Harpswell where there are records in written town histories, and Bowdoinham, where he and his wife, Abigail Eastman, raised their 11 children.

Millay descendants still live on the land settled by James and Abigail in the early 19th century.  I would like to know if anyone can help me figure out where this elusive ancestor might have lived in Ireland.
