  • I also have family born in Kilnacarriga.  My grandfather Patrick Murray was born in 1864 - his father was Michael Murray who would have been born around the 1830s.  I would be interested in finding out more about the Crowley family from Kilnacarriga.

    Thanks.

Good morning.  Thank you for reaching out.

Based on the place and the dates, it is likely our families knew each other.

I was able to obtain some family records from the Waterford Heritage Society in Waterford City, Waterford.  They have St. Carthage Church (Lismore) records.

The Griffiths Valuation has Patrick Crowley Sr. in Kilncarriga. Based on our family research, it seems likely that the Patrick in Kilnacarriga is the husband of Mary (nee Keefe) Crowley and the father of Patrick Jr., Johanna, John Francis, Edmund and Alice. There may have been other children but we can only account for these as of this time in our research.

We have the St. Carthage baptimal records of Patrick Jr., Johanna, John Francis, Edmund and Alice.

I have been to Lismore to do research several times and have visited the Kilnacarriga area.

As you may know, the history of the land and people of the Kilnacarriga/Lismore area is closely tied to the history of Lismore/Devonshire Castle.

Our Crowley family immigrated to the US.  Patrick Jr. came 1st in 1850.  2 years later, the balance of the family (less patrick Sr.) followed. We continue to research Patrick Sr.

There are still some Crowley's in Lismore.

There is a Crolwey Clan reunion every 4 years in County Cork where most of the Crowley Clan seems to have settled.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

  • Many thanks John for your detailed reply.  I think that Robert Murray is my gg grandfather.  It is interesting that he sublet a house only from Patrick Crowly given that it is still a very rural area. I have a spreadsheet of all the marriages and baptisms I've been able to find for my Murray family in Kilnacarriga and the surrounding townlands and have listed all the witnesses and sponsors but no Crowleys so far.  So they may not have been connected by birth but would definitely have know each other. It's great that you have been able to access the St Carthage records.  I was in Lismore and "visited" Kilnacarriga in 2017 - meant to be there now!  Hopefully in 2021.  I have a number of DNA connections through these Murrays but have no documenation that confirms Robert Murray as my gg grandfather.  I also have DNA connections with Crowleys from Co Waterford but again no documentation.  Sadly the Valuation Revision books for the Republic are not online - it would be interesting to see the successions of the Kilnacarriga properties after 1851.  Hopefully I will also be able to go to the Valuation Office in Dublin next year to look into these records.  Perhaps you have already done this? My grandfather also went to the US at some stage - worked as a pig farmer somewhere and at some stage came to Australia before 1914 when he married my grandmother in Sydney.  He was significantly older than she was and I have no dates or places for his time in the US.

Do you know if the St Carthage records are available on Roots Ireland?  I guess they are bundled with the Lismore records - just wondering how the St Carthage records are identified?  I have my grandfather's baptism but I can only see the parish on the NLI record not the specific church.

Thanks again John - am very happy to share any info etc that I have.

    Cheers

    Paula

  • Paula,

Thank you for your message.  I take it you live in Australia.  I live in NW Illinois about an hour west of Chicago.

The St. Carthage records are at the church office in Lismore (original books) and (digitized ? )copies at the Waterford Heritage Center in Waterford City.

Michael O'Connor at the Heritage Center has been very helpful.

    His email :

    waterfordheritage1@gmail.com

They do charge for their service.

There are also some very old and interesting books/records at the Anglican Church in Lismore. The current Anglican Church in Lismore was the original St. Carthage Church. The cemetery surrounding the now Anglican church has early Catholic and later Anglican burials. The current St. Carthage Church is #3, #2 having burned. The area catholics are buried around St Carthage Church and down the street at a larger cemetery...where there is a famine graveyard.

The pub (Red Hen ?) across from the now closed Lismore House Hotel is a great source of conversation.

I have some Kilnacarriga maps and various other items I could e mail you.

On the Griffith's Valuation page for Kilnacarriga it looks as through Patrick Crowley was renting and looks as though he also sublet some of the poverty.  As you may know, virtually all the property in the area was owned by the Duke of Devonshire, the Lismore Castle owner.

There are records on Roots Ireland but they are not indexed as far as I can recall.

Looking forward to researching and sharing with you.

    Paula,

I am not sure. Looks to me like whatever we write on this "form" is "public".

As such, this is probably not the best way to share all info before it is looked over by both.

I do not know how we can exchange info/documents on this site as I do not see any place for attachments. Do yuo have a tree on ancestry?

    John
