Johanna McCarthy was born in early to mid- September of 1833. Her parents were James McCarthy and Julia Bolding. She was baptised on 29 Sep 1833.

Her parents died in the Great Famine and she and her younger sister Nora wound up in the Kilmallock Workhouse. In 1849, they were loaded aboard the Elgin and shipped to Australia as part of the Famine Orphan Program. There she became a servant in the house of a Protestant minister named Rev. William Stowe, in Paynham, near Adelaide.

In 1860, she married another Irish immigrant named Michael Callaghan, from Effin, Limerick. They had two children in Melbourne and, in 1865, they immigrated to California where they bought land on the Sacramento Delta. They had two more sons, and the family grew moderately wealthy and successful.
