Anyone who can help me with the Art family from county Tyrone?
I know what happened to John Art once he left Ireland. He signed up for the 72nd Regiment of Foot on 4/9/1808 in County Tyrone when he was 21 and I can follow his military record and trace him to Cape Town where her lived until he died. I have been unable to find anything about his parents or any siblings.
A mystery that if I could solve might help. It says on his military record that he was born in the parish of Rothby, near the town of Tyrone, in the county of Tyrone and was enlisted at the Castle LOausare (I can't make this out exactly). I can't find a parish Rothby or a town Tyrone or that castle with a name like that in Tyrone.
It also says that his prior occupation was heaver. Would he have worked on a coal mine heaving coal and were there coal mines just prior to 1808 in Tyrone?
Anybody able to help me?
