John Bernard O'Neill 1848

Back to List

John Bernard O'Neill was reportedly born 17 March 1848 in Co. Galway, most likely in or near Oughterard.

His parents, Felin O'Neil and Penelope Sullivan, were married there on 23 November 1845. Felin may have been from Clonoe, Tyrone, and Penelope may have been local to Oughterard.

HI!....just to say that your "FELIN" O'NEILL, O'NEAL is probably actually FELIX. A distant part of my family has a couple Felix O'Neills  Pittsburgh PA and Co Tyrone. When searching it is sometimes spelled PHELIX. This Felix O'Neill of mine was born about 1803 in Co Tyrone. Came to America with wife, Alice, Alicia CRILLY. They lived in Pittsburgh PA (actually Birmingham on the South Side). Children married into the Ward and Strickel familys. Enjoyed your picture!!

  • Thanks, Mary. His written marriage record in the Oughterard parish church ledger could be interpreted as either 'Felin' or 'Felix'. The latter hadn't sounded very Irish to me but it's good to know that it's a possibility; I'll search for both. And yes, John took quite a picture! I'd love to have known him.

I'm still looking for John B's Baptismal record. His family Bible says that he was born in "Co. Galway" but not where. I assume in or near Oughterard as his parents were married there, but that's not certain.
