John Connor/Connors, my great great grandfather, according to his military records, was born in Ballylongford, Ireland, Parish of Aghavellan, approx 1820. He was a weaver by trade.

 

He enlisted in the Army on the 6/7/1840 in Limerick. He was made Acting Corp. He completed his term of 23 years. 22 of those years in India. 

 

He sailed out of Chatham England, on the troop ship the George Armstrong on the 26/9/1840. Along with other soldiers and their families. According to the ships manifest/ passenger list, John was 20. Apparently already a widower.

The ship arrived in Madras on the 31/12/1841

 

He married Ann Connor/Connors née Durkin, a spinster on the 28/7/1847

RC church St Thomas Mount Madras. According to his marriage certificate, he was a widower.

 

John and Ann had 3 daughters born in Vizakhapatnam India

John was with the East India Company Army, European Veterans Corp. in 1857 after the uprising the soldiers were given a choice. They could stay on or return home. John chose to return to Ballylongford, Ireland. He was on the list of supernumeries, with the Dept of Public Works, with the 102 Reg, until he and his family sailed to England in 1863 on the commissioned ship the Royal Stuart. They arrived on 15/8/1863.

He was retired out on the 1/9/1863 and given a service pension from the Lord Clive Military Fund. Pension No 657/76

 

John and Ann had 2 more children, Anne, and Michael, both born at Ballylongford.
