John Connors was born in Listowel, County Kerry in October of 1830.
As a young man, Connors enlisted in the British military forces.
He fought in the Crimean War where he was mostly stationed in the trenches at Sebastapol.
On the 8th of September 1855, Connors was involved in action at Redan. He saw an officer surrounded by enemy forces. He rushed forth and saved the man's life, shooting one soldier and bayonetting another.
For this selfless act of bravery, Connors was awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross.
He went on to rise to the rank of Coporal. He died on the 29th of January 1857 on the island of Corfu when he fell from the battlements of Fort Neuf. He was buried on the island in the British cemetery.
