John Flynn was born about 1819 in Castlebar, Co Mayo.  His parents were Michael Flynn and his wife Sabina.

In 1844, Michael had moved to Liverpool where he met and married Mary Hogan from Tullamore, Co Offlay.

On 31 Mar 1845 the couple arrived in Sydney, New South Wales on the vessel Elizabeth.  Their first child Sabina was born on 25 Nob 1845 at Sussex St., The Rocks, Sydney.  By 1847 they were living in Woollongong, New South Wales, where son Michael James (my great grandfather) was born on 1 Aug 1847.  By 1858 the family were living on the outskirts of Wangaratta, Victoria, where John had a small area of land.  He worked at a Dairyman and Fruiterer, selling to both town and farming folk traverlling door to door.

He died on 1 Dec 1889 at his home, where he lived with son Michael James Flynn and his wife, Catherine Bourke, and family.

  • I think we share common ancestors, my Flynns are from around Castlebar, in Ballymchugh, ballycastle, etc and have married Catherine Bourke of a different generation. Do you know more about John Flynn, ie parents, siblings, etc and or of Michael Flynn birth, death, etc?  Very excited to discuss with you.  Went there two years ago and explored cemeteries and land.

  • Hi, my Grgr Grandfather was Martin Flynn, born 1812 in Castlebar (according to his gravestone). Since there seem to be only a few Flynn's from Castlebar I was wondering if there could be a link. Martin married a Sarah Riley in the late 1940s and they had Patrick in Ireland in March 1849. According to the census records, their second child was born stateside in 1853, and my GrGrandmother Kate was Wisconsin born in 1856. That's all I know based on US census and the cemetery records in Whitewater Wisconsin. Any information you have found about the Castlebar Flynn's would be appreciated.
