John Hassett is my 3x great-grandfather.  This is a very common name.  He was born ABT Dec 1805 in Brownstown, Castletowndelvin, Delvin, County Westmeath in Clonmellon Religious Parish (Co Westmeath & Meath).   He was baptized 9 Dec 1805, Clonmellon (Catholic) Parish, Meath & Westmeath, Ireland.  The record from the Irish Catholic Parishes Record reads:  9 Dec 1805, Baptism John, Parents John Hafsen [where f=ss] and Nelly McCormick, Witnesses Michael (?) Connors and Ann Gogarty, Brownstown, Kilallon, p.67.  There are many other baptisms of John Hafsen/Hassen/later Hassett at this time, including 3 illigitimate births named John Hassen.  All their fathers were also named John Hassen.  This subject, my John Hassett, has the closest birth date to those which we had, such as in immigration records & census records of ABT 1803.  Additionally, I have had McCormick DNA matches, leading me to believe this to be the correct man.

John Hassett married Catherine Battersby per Irish Catholic Parish Records:  Marriage 26 June 1835, Clonmellon Parish, Westmeath, Ireland, John Hassen m. Catherine Batersby by Fr. James Murray, parents not recorded, sponsors James Murray & Thomas Batersby. Neither party previously married.

John & Catherine Hassett & family lived in Brownstown, Castletowndelvin, Delvin, Co Westmeath.  I find evidence of 5 children baptized in Clonmellon Catholic religious parish records;  Eleanor "Ellen" 1836 IRE - 1891 USA, Honor b.1837 - ? IRE (did not emigrate w/family), Mary 1839 IRE - 1918 USA, John Hassett III 1842 IRE - 1919 USA, Catherine 1847 IRE - 1849 at sea.

The family emigrated from Ireland as Irish Famine Refugees, leaving on the barque Huma and arriving in New York Harbor 26 March 1849 - at the height of An Gorta Mor (The Great Famine).  Baby Catherine died at sea 3 days before arrival.  The family settled in Genesee County, New York - Upstate, half way between Buffalo and Rochester.  They may have already had family living here.  I am aware of a number of Hassett families presently living in the Buffalo, NY area, though I am not sure if related or not.  An 1850 census shows a 13 y/o Hugh Hassett living with the family, subsequent censuses find him living with other families elsewhere in the same county.  The family attaches themselves to St. Francis Roman Catholic Church, LeRoy, Genesee, NY, USA.

John Hassett dies 14 October 1881 at home in Bergen, Genesee, NY, USA and is buried in St. Francis Cemetery, LeRoy, Genesee, NY, USA.  He is buried with his wife, daughter Ellen & son John.
