John and his wife Mary Jane Shiel Dalton returned to Ireland in 1904 with their first child John Francis, born May 11, 1903 in New Haven, Connecticut, USA.  They visited Newport in Kilvellane civil parish, Co. Tipperary near John's birthplace in Boarmanshill in Abington civil parish, Co. Limerick.  They departed Queenstown on White Star Line's RMS Cedric and returned to New York on 2 December 1904.
