John J. "Jack" Gilbane was born in Jamestown, County Leitrim, the son of Michael Gilbane and Anne Foley. Little is known about his early years in Leitrim, except that he was one of 9 children. There were several other Gilbane (or Kilbane - the names appear to have been interchangable) families in the area, but I have not been able to confirm the relationships between them. He immigrated to the United States in 1885 along with his older sister Margaret and settled in Rhode Island. He returned to Ireland briefly, after the death of his father in 1899, returning to United States in 1903. In June of 1906 he married Margaret M Collins who had immigrated from Fortbrown, County Galway and became a US citizen in 1907. John and Margaret had 6 children: James, John J Jr., Thomas (my father), Mary, Julia, and Anne. Their son, John was killed in an elevator accident in 1918 when he was 11 years old. John died in 1938 at the age of 73.
