John Joseph Murphy, born about 1861, was the third of seven brothers. He also had one sister. (His father was named Michael and mother possibly Bridget Murray).

John Murphy married Mary Deasy 4 August 1878 in St Finbarrs South Parish Church, Cork City. They initially lived in Cove Street and in later years they lived at 14 Military Road then moved to Altavilla on Lower Glanmire Road.

John was a cutter and tailor, and after working at Dennehys joined the tailoring business at 9 Marlboro Street, Cork. The tailoring shop at Marlboro Street was well known and run by Thomas Murphy – who may have been an uncle of John.

John and Mary had 5 children. Michael died in infancy. Mary, Christina, Eileen, and William (also a tailor) all migrated to New Zealand, though not at the same time.

John Joseph Murphy died 31 December 1911 but the death was not registered until 1912. Later that year, widowed Mary (Deasy) travelled to New Zealand with daughter Christina. All the children eventually migrated to New Zealand over the next few years.
