John Joseph Walsh was born at Boher train station in Co. Limerick, 9 miles from Limerick city. His parents were Thomas Walsh 1825-1883, and Margaret Walsh (neé Doherty) 1835-1920. His father was the station master for Boher, a station on the Waterford, Limerick and Western Railway. John was the second youngest of 13 siblings. 

John trained as a carpenter, and worked in Limerick City.

In February 1896 he married Margaret Mullaly in Limerick City. He was 24 at the time and she was 19. Margaret was the daughter of Martin Mullaly, a publican. John and Margaret lived at 13 Arthur's Quay in Limerick. They had three children all born in Limerick City.. Thomas born in 1896, Martin born in 1897, died in infancy, and Margaret, known as Daisy, born in 1898.

In March 1899 Margaret, John's wife died in Limerick City. She was 22 years old. After the funeral, John and his two children, Tom and Daisy, moved in with John's mother Margaret on Queen Street.

In September 1907, John, now aged 35, emigrated alone from Queenstown, Cork to New York and from there he went to Hartford, Connecticut. He became a naturalised US citizen in 1920. He came home to Ireland for his mother's funeral. 

John died in 1956 in Hartford. He was 81 years old.

  • My John Walsh migrated to the US and married Hannah Duncan. It’s such a common name. I wonder if it could be possible?

  • I'm not sure if they are the same person. My John Walsh was a widower when he emigrated to the States. He emigrated from Limerick to Hartford Cobbecticutt. He was a carpenter. I am not aware that he remarried, but I guess it might be possible?

  • John's sister Anna Maria,born 1866 married a James Heslin from Westmeath.James also a carpenter.Son,Matthew married my aunt Mary.
