Migrated to/Born in Australia

John Juan Callinan was born in about 1844, in Kilshanny, Co. Clare, Ireland. He arrived in Sydney, NSW, Australia on 6th June 1866 on the Peerless from Westport Co. Mayo aged 22. His parents were listed but not onboard: Jeremiah and Mary from Kilshanny.

John married Lousia Keen 11yrs later in 1877 in Warialda, New South Wales. John Juan Callinan was quite successful in Moree with property, a general store and a Spirit Store. He went bankrupt before selling up and becoming a carrier in Sydney. I found that he was sentenced to 3 years hard labour for grievous bodily harm on a policeman. Likely this is why he was sent to Callun Park lunatic asylum. I also found from his death Notice that he lived in Bolton St Newcastle which isn't really shabby so he must have picked up his game or Louisa found gainful employment. He died in 1906 in Newcastle, New South Wales, at the age of 56.
