Back to List

My husband's great grandfather was a John Miles (or Myles) for whom we have been searching for a long time. His mother's name was Elizabeth and while John was born in 1835 and possibly baptized in Cloyne (as Myles) his mother remarried in New York City in 1839 to a James Courtney formerly of Kilworth. When we next find John Miles he is in NYC with his mother Elizabeth and his stepfather James Courtney.

If the baptism record that I just found is him, his father's name was John Myles and his mother was Elizabeth Hennessy. My theory has always been that John's father died when he was very young, possibly in NYC and his mother remarried soon after. A recent finding of James Courtney's obituary led me to look in Cork.

John emigrated at some point to NYC. He inherited 50 Grand St. in Manhattan from his stepfather James Courtney, He married late in life to a Mary Doherty from Scotland and they had 5 children. He died in Brooklyn in 1892.
