John O'Brien was born in the parish of Gallbelly, County Limerick, Ireland.
He came to the USA at the age of 14 and arrived in New York, NY. Later he went to St. Louis where he worked as an apprentice learning the craft of bricklayer and plasterer. Next he went to Philadelphia where he married Miss Annie McDermott on 7 May 1865. The couple then moved to Wenona, Illinois, USA. They had eleven children, two of which died in infancy. Several of the children lived in Kansas, USA.
