Julia Toohey was born at Burntwood farm Cloughjordan 1848 to John Wm Toohey and Alice Mary. Two sisters that I know of, Winnifred 1841-1913, Bridget Mary 1852-1915. Left Ireland and married John Foley from Co Leitrim, family history saying they met on the boat over to England.  They first lived at Quarry Gap Yorkshire England where my grandmother was born 1872 and she was named after her grand mother Alice Mary. They soon moved to Oldham England where 3 more children were born Sarah, Margaret and Julia.

I know that I still had family in Cloughjordan in the 1960's as I can remember my elderly aunts, Margaret Moss amd Mary Moss, visiting then.

Very keen to know more about my great grandmother Julia's history and to learn more about Cloughjordan.

  • Hi Julia,
Seamus Costello here from Cloughjordan. I will have to research Tooheys from Burntwood. Any idea what the relations names were on 1960s? I'd be delighted answer questions about Cloughjordan.
My great grandmother was a Toohey from Coolnamunna, Cloughjordan. She was Elizabeth, her Dad was David Touhy. He was married to Keenihan.
    Thanks for contacting.

  • Seamus thank you so much for your reply. I don't know whether you are able to see the reply I had from a local historian or my reply to that. I'll try to repost it in this message.

    His reply...

In the Cloughjordan parish records i found the following children ;Winifred 1839,Margaret 1841,Judy 1843,Catherine 1845,Anne 1849, another Catherine in 1850 and Matt in 1851 born to Rody(Roger) Tuohy and Alica(Eliza) Tooher  at Burntwood, Cloughjordan(.The spelling of the name in the Church records is Tuohy as opposed to Toohey)
The lady looking for the information thought that the Parents were John Wm Toohey and Alice Mary?.It looks to me that the fathers name is Rody(Roger) and the mothers name Alice(Eliza) is probably the same as Alice Mary..There are no births for a father named John Wm Toohey
The fathers name varies between Rody and Roger  and the mothers name between Eliza ,Alacia and Ally for the different births.
The wedding of Rody and Alacia took place on 19-1-1838.and the witnesses were R Cody and Mary Scurlock.Rody's address was shown as Islandwood which is a townland adjacent to Burntwood.
In Griffiths Valuation Rody is shown as Roderick Tuohy at Islandwood with a very small holding of three quarters of an acre . Roderick is another variation of the name Rody.It appears to me that he was living at  Islandwood. The two townlands Burntwood and Islandwood are right beside each other and that the priest recording the births was not precise in recording the addresses.

There was also a query about relations living in Cloughjordan in the 1960's.There are no families of Tuohy or Tooher in Burntwood/Islandwood now and as far as i know they were not there in the 1960's.I also looked to see if there was any record of marriages of of the other girls that did not emigrate or of the brother Matt  in the Cloughjordan marriage records, but there was  no record of any of them getting married.

    My reply..

I'm beginning to wonder if I have been barking up the wrong tree. I've been trying to find my Irish ancestors for 30 yrs with no luck whatsoever as both Julia and John were illiterate the only clue was in 1881 census where she was living in Oldham, England with her husband John Foley and my grandmother Alice 9 and her younger sister Sarah, it states she was born in Barrwood, Tipperary but as she was illiterate it was written down as heard by an English ear. I have never got to the bottom of 'Barrwood' in all this time but recently having had my dna matched to two family trees that have Tooheys in their tree as coming from Burntwood Tipperary in the 1840s I thought that could be it as our dna matched. It's from their trees that I got ( wrongly it seems ) Julia's mother and father and the spelling of Toohey  Could Judy b.1843 be my great grandmother Julia? I wonder what happened to all of the brothers and sisters?

    ..........
It's fantastic to hear from someone else who had a great grandmother in Tipperary Seamus. Do you think 'Barrwood' spoken with a strong Irish accent could be Burntwood? It's my only lead! And the dna matches on ancestry.com that link me to Burntwood , Cloughjordan. In the 1960's my elderly aunts came to visit family in Tipperary that's all I know, I gave the wrong impression by saying Cloughjordan was their destination I only heard they had gone to Tipperary. My father Thomas Moss, who was Julia Tooheys grandson was the youngest of the family, but died when he was 38 and I was 2 so I've had no chance to find out about my Irish heritage. I've been trying for over 30 years to find them!

  • Hi Juila,
You have do much information there. Yes definately Burntwood,I'd say. It's only a short distance from Cloughjordan. All the Toohers have left, they had a hotel in the village, called Toohers Hotel. Cloughjordan was busy then because we havs a train station which prompted a lot of trade through the village. Burntwood, Islandwood and Garroun are all close together. I'll have a look at the Griffith's again and see where exactly the house was in Burntwood. I will know it very well no doubt. Cloughjordan is a great place to live and be associated with. We now have the first Evo Village in Ireland. Check out the www. thevillage.ie. My email is sea.costello@gmail.com.
