KATE  RIORDAN was born in Cloghanecanuig, St. Finan's Bay, Co. KERRY to JAMES RIORDAN and NORAH  SULLIVAN in the parish of Killemlagh.

She had two sisters and five brothers married within the barony of Iveragh hence there was  a vast number of  Riordan cousins. She married Micky Lynch Direen, Aughatubrid in 1880 and they had five sons and four daughters. Her family were very bright and secured good jobs.

A son Jerry was a teacher in Dublin up to 1912. He left teaching and joined the English Police Force and became one of the original members of Scotland Yards  flying squad. He was successful in catching many spies during World War 1.

Kate herself was a renowned story-teller and was best at telling fairy tales that she had heard during her young days in The Glen.

She died at age 91 and was buried in Keelavarnogue Cemetery, Cahersiveen with her husband Michael and son Pat.
