Mabel Esmonde Cahill was born on 2nd April 1863 in the market town of Ballyragget, Co. Kilkenny.  After growing up in Ireland, Mabel Cahill established a residence in New York and became the first foreign player to prevail at a major tennis championship when she won the 1891 U.S. Championships. She successfully defended that title the following year, defeating Bessie Moore in a hard fought, five-set final. She then elected to default her crown in 1893 and did not compete again on the international level, returning to Ireland and leaving an enviable record of success in the United States behind her.

Cahill died on New Year’s Day 1905 back home in Kilkenny.

Mabel Cahill is just one of over 320 characters featured at EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum.
