Migrated to/Born in Australia

Margaret McCarthy emigrated from Ireland to Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, travelling aboard the ship "Red Rover" in 1832.  Margaret was 16yrs old and occupation on shipping records listed her as a Child's Maid.

Margaret while in Hobart, met her husband James Thomas Leslie, who had also immigrated from Ireland in 1830 and married him in Hobart  on the 1 January 1835.  Margaret was 18yrs old and James 22yrs old.

Margaret Gertrude McCarthy

Their first child Thomas was born in October 1835 and some months later in 1836 they decided they were ready to travel by foot to the Town of Launceston some 200km away where James planned to get work, build a home and settle down.  Bravely they travelled through bushland, camping and living off rabbit or wallaby meat that James would catch or shoot along the way.  Many stories were passed down to their children regarding the people they encountered during their journey to Launceston ie: escaped bushrangers/convicts as well as Indigenous people  who would always keep their distance, but continued to osbserve them, along the way.  James had stated to family members, that he knew they were being observed but was never bothered by them as  he had shown respect for the land and only killed what he needed for food, preparing and cooking it for himself, Margaret and Thomas.

When they reached Launceston Margaret and James went on to have a  further 10 children. James and Margaret made sure that their children were all educated until at least 10 years of age and were all part of the Catholic Church of Apostles in Launceston. (It is noted that James and his son's were responsible for the beautiful "bluestone" that adorns this Catholic Church).  Margaret outside of the family had very little social contact with others with the exception of her attendance to the Church on a Sunday.

It is said, that when James passed away Margaret sold their property and moved to a little paling house behind the now "Queen Victoria Museum" near the Tamar River, Launceston. The money she had left over from the sale of the property, was apparently then given  to the  Catholic Church.  Margaret died at the age of 69yrs of age in 1886, while staying at the Invalid Depot, Launceston. She was buried with her beloved James in the Catholic Cemetery  located near Coats Patons Bowls Club, Glen Dhu, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia.

  • Hi Sharon, in answer to your question, I'm unsure.  I have Margaret arriving in Australia in 1832 aboard the ship  "Red Rover".  She was approx 16 years old in 1832.  I'm on Ancestry.com.au and only have parents listed at this stage as John McCarthy & Cath Connor.  Which is still really yet to be verified, but others have also listed these two people on their trees as well.  For me though I'd Just like to see a little more further information to be confident that I'm on the right track with them, but your welcome to use the info for further searches .    As for siblings, I'm yet find them in the Ireland records.     (using the parents listed)

A lot of my family have DNA submitted on Ancestry, My Heritage, FTDNA and GEDmatch.com.  If you are affiliated with any of these sites let me know and we can look into it a bit more.  I'd love to know more about Margarets line, but as I say more work is to be done.  DNA is very a very handy tool and comparisons can be made to see who we share with and find closure with some of these mysteries.

  • I think that your Margaret is the one baptised on 18 July 1817 at St. Finbarr's Roman Catholic church in Cork City to John McCarthy and Cath Connor.  There are also two siblings baptised there: John bapt. 8 July 1820; Joanna bapt. 14 May 1824 (mother's name shown as Ellin Connor).

Mararet's parents were married at St Finbarr's on 11 Sept 1816.

The Irish Roman Catholic church records have been indexed on FindMyPast but the original records are available online via the National Library of Ireland: https://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000633123#page/88/mode/1up

  • Thankyou so much Allan, I do think your right as well as I did have St Finbarr's Catholic church down on my records.  I was unaware of any siblings though so I've since added the two other children to My Ancestry tree.  Further may be found on these two to find where they ended up.  As we know Margaret came to Australia.  Also Perhaps Catherine McCarthy nee Connor divorced or died and John McCarthy remarried Ellen to have that daughter Joanna.  I'll have to try to find out a bit more on this one.

Any other information is most welcome and I do thankyou for looking into this for me.

    kind regards

  • I don't think this site takes DNA but I have my and family on other sites.  Ancestry.com.au is my original one.  I uploaded copies to , My Heritage, FTDNA, Living DNA and GEDmatch.com.  A copy of your autosomal DNA can be uploaded to all of them, however My Heritage does have member fees.  The others, you can join for free.

  • Hi Alimac

I've just seen your post here regarding your McCarthy family.  I also am on Ancestry under Cook/Currie Family Tree managed by Starfyre07.  All my families DNA is also managed by me. Do you think my McCarthy family could be connected to yours?  Can you also tell me your Tree name or your user for your DNA as I can try to  search for your name.  I had John McCarthy 1790 down with Cartherine  Connor 1797.  Of course I am open to any information if this is off course.

  • Hi Allison, I had a look at GEDmatch and had to lower the Cm size to 4 and 3 to get results.  The usual cm of 7 wasn't good enough.

I've seen this before however as it can depend on how distant a connection is, but there is room to play and a connection is shown, especially on the cm3.  My GEDmatch is RD2915447. I do have other family members registered on there as well, so I might see if anyone pulls you in stronger.

I will also take another look at my Tree on Ancestry and see if I can build on the McCarthy family a little more and see if I can't make a connection.
