Migrated to/Born in Australia

Margaret KIng born about 1827?  Margaret was the first of the King family to migrate to Australia,

Margaret King shows her age in 1849 as being 18, on her Shipping Records, however this would show 1831 as being born, however in other documents it shows her being born in 1827 which would have made her 22 when she left Ireland. Her calling was listed as Housemaid and parents James and Anty (Anastacia) were both dead, native place and county is Waterford. She had no relations in the Colony. She could neither read or write.  Margaret was in one of the Workhouses in Waterford due to the starvation and disease of the Irish during the Potato Famine. There were also Workhouses in Portlaw.  We will probably never know for certain which Workhouse she was in. She was one of the first 400 female famine orphans who came to Australia in the Earl Gray Scheme.

Margaret arrived on the ship ‘SS Panama’ which arrived in Sydney on 12 January 1850. Her name is engraved on a glass wall dedicated to the Irish Famine Memorial at the Hyde Park Barracks in Sydney.  All the orphans were placed at the Barracks before being delivered as Domestics. Margaret went to Kiama and worked for a L. O’Toole.  Margaret met and married Peter Allen born  in the UK and they married 19 December 1850.  They had 12 children.  She died 1876 and is buried at Kangaroo Valley NSW which is near Kiama.  Margaret is my gg Aunt.

  • DeniseI hope we are related as I have not been very successful in finding info regarding my King family.  James King married Anastacia Fitzgerald and they had Thomas my direct line, James, Mary and Margaret.  I have no info on James or Mary, but they lived in Portlaw and Thomas lived in Kilmacow Kilkenny before he and his wife Mary Donovan and five children migrated to Australia along with Margaret.  Can you tell me your line?  We have James, Thomas and Patrick in nearly every generation here in Australia. I did find a James King in Prince Edward Island Canada from Portlaw.
    kind regards, Denise

  • Hello Ray,  Peter Allen married Margaret King who is the sister of my gg grandfather, Thomas King.  Margaret came to Australia first and Thomas and his family followed in 1854.  They all settled down around Kiama/Jamberoo area of NSW.   Margaret and Thomas had a brother James and a sister Mary, however I have not been able to find any information on either of them.  I note that you mentioned a post on Mary King.  Do you have any details as I do not recall reading any information on her, and am wondering if she is connected to our family. I am not sure where Margaret is buried, as through family connections it was mentioned that she may have been buried up on Kangaroo Mountain which is near Kiama.  My King family are buried at Jamberoo and Kiama.

It has been very difficult finding any information on the "Irish Kings and Fitzgeralds" sides of the family.  I believe that the Kings came from Waterford and or Kilkenny.  Thomas' shipping records state he was born in Kilkenny, however his son James my ggrandfather was born in Portlaw Waterford.   If you have any other information on the King side I would love to hear further from you.

    Kind regards

    Denise

  • Hi Denise,

The post re Margaret King I was referring to was the lead item on this page. The post doesn't show a name, but I'm guessing it was yours as the author mentions Margaret King as being his/her gg Aunt. I intend to Hyde Park Barracks to see the glass wall as soon as I can.

The references to James and Thomas are only notations from other web sites and searches along the way. Most of my searches have been through free websites and the NSW Births Deaths and Mariages Website has been very useful. Thomas is there and is registered as 9816/1865. You have probably already been there. I've also been in contact with the Kiama Library but they are closed because of Covid 19. https://library.kiama.nsw.gov.au/history/family-history-centre

I haven't atempted to go back further from the James and Anastasia King reference as yet but it is on my list and if I come up with something I'll definitely post.

This has been quite a frustrating search in many ways. My father never talked about his family line and it wasn't until I sat down with my twin Aunts before they died that I started to try to piece it all together. They were into the dementia spiral at that stage and were mixing a few things up, including names across generations but they threw me a giant curved ball stating the family originated in Naas, County Kildare. They were so clear and emphatic on that point and as they had never travelled I took this a being relaible. Of course, not far from Naas is the Bog of Allen and a village by the same name. That's still an unaswered question even though my research has shown it to be without base. The other annoying aspect of my search has been the small range of Christian names, repeated across generations, and the propensity for 'William' to be known as 'George' and vice versa.

    Cheers,

    Ray

Hello Ray, yes it is very frustrating finding our ancestors.   I take it that you live in Aus. Have you been to Jamberoo to visit the graves of Thomas and Mary King and their daughter Bridget who died young in her 30's.  One of her children Joseph Rutland Faulks married Margaret Allen (daughter of Margaret King and Peter Allen).  Thomas, Mary and Bridget are buried together and I had their grave restored some years ago, it was pretty run down.  You may have seen pics of it posted after it was restored.

I am disappointed with the Kiama Court as when I enquired regarding court appearances in the 1850's and 60's was told the records have been destroyed.  That is such a shame.

Regarding family naming patterns.  I read on this website recently that naming patterns in boys was more common than girls especially with families who were quite poor.  In one way it is good to know so we can check for earlier generations., that is if they are documented.  The earliest I have got back is 1811 when Thomas King was born.   Have you done any searching on the Mormon site, Family Search, it used to be quite good, but is a bit difficult now to follow, and was not always 100 percent correct, but it helped.  Not that I can help you with the Allen side, as you seem to have it covered pretty well, but if you want any more on the King side let me know, what I have on Margaret is not a lot. I am curious to find anything on James and Mary King her brother and sister.

    Kind regards

    Denise
