Margaret Murphy

Back to List

My Great Grand Mother came to Australia on what ship I have no Idea. I think she came with her sister Julia Murphy. Her parents were William Murphy and Anne Twomey. Married 1st Mary 1835. Witness or sponsor to the Marriage were Dan Donovan or James Guillee (?) strange surname

Her siblings were Johanna  Murphy born 18th May 1836, witness to the baptism were Joseph Twomy and Johanna Farrissy : Michael Murphy born 30th  November 1838 witness Tmothy Murphy and Mary Fitzgerald ; Margaret Murphy born 1st July 1840 witness John Coveny and Johana Leahy Mother this time Nancy which equals Anne ; Margaret Muprhy born 14 th September 1841 Witness Tim Flaherty and Anne Brown; Julia Murphy born 23rd April 1843 witness Daniel Courtney and Ann Dooly. All of the above took place in the Church of St Marys at passage west, Cork. I have a baptism certificate for Margaret Murphy which shows the 1841 date but an elderly aunt told me that her grandmother said it was strange as she was older than she thought when she wrote for the baptism certificate. Perhaps the priest sent her the wrong baptism certificate . The above are all baptism dates as the baptism certificate shows a birth date of 28th of June 1840 and was sent 11 day October 1929 by post of one penny to Australia. The first record I have for her is on marriage certificate here in Australia at St Marys Cathedral Sydney 3rd September 1868 to Lewis (Louis) Nelson a sailor from Norway. The witness to the marriage was a Henry MacDonald and Eliza Costello, both Louis and Margaret had a most interesting life here in Australia. Her Sister Julia Married a Richard Chute in Brisbane on the 14th March 1889.
