Margaret Ryan is my 4 times great grandmother. I only know of her name as her daughter Mary Clancy names her on her immigration papers in 1841. Margaret Ryan and Michael Clancy, both Roman Catholic, married in the parish of Newport, Co North Tipperary on 16/2/1817. The town land was given as Newport Town. Present as best men were Patrick Ryan and Denis Clancy. Denis was probably Michaels brother or father, and Patrick possibly Mary’s cousin or uncle as I don’t believe she had any siblings and the search by the historian turned none up. They were married by a priest - Stephan Hayes. Margret and Micheal had one child, Mary Clancy born about 1821, immigrated on an assisted  passage to Australia on The United Kingdom 7 Sept 1841. She stated her parents were deceased by this time and she was under the guardianship of her uncle John Clancy and his wife also named Mary.

Mary married John Jackson on November 2, 1844, in Braidwood, New South Wales. She died on October 15, 1908, in Braidwood, New South Wales, having lived a long life of 87 years. John Jackson former English convict worked hard and bought land in Majors Creek near Braidwood NSW. That land is still in the Jackson family today 2021.

Thank you for sharing this. Many of my ancestors were baptized in Newport parish around this same time frame. You mention a priest looked up some of this information for you. Are there records available for this parish beyond what can be found online at ancestry.com and the national ireland site? If so what is the contact info or process to obtain the information?
Thank you. Dave Kane    (I have both Clanceys and Ryan's in my ancestry from Tipperary- but realize they are common surnames)

  • Thank you for sharing! My gggrandmother was also a Ryan (Bridget born 1831) from Tipperary. I believe her parents were Hugh and Julia, and had a brother name John. She married Peter Tyrrell and came to Illinois.

  • Hi to all,
I checked the date of the marriage. The Parish Books are hard to read, this link is the page for the marriage of Michael Clancy and Margaret Ryan.
It says Patrick Ryan was her Father.
    right hand page 11th line.

This is the main link to the site.

If you are in Ancestry Worldwide, you can search the name and get the dates, then use this NLI site.
The Parish Book was Newport and Birdhill, if you search Birdhill, it's south of Nenagh, then you can find Newport.
Civil Records were introduced in 1864 so we rely on The Tithe records, Griffiths Valuation and the Parish Books before that time.

Meg, you would really have to know what Parish or townland where your Bridget Ryan was from.
It seems Pater Tyrrell was from Athboy in County Meath. (a tree came up in my searching list)

Dave K,  You would need Ancestry, I have Worldwide, well until the week end, Familysearch.org you can find the records in there, the go to the NLI site (the registers one above)
If you have townland names or Parish then you should be able to find info.

    Cheers to all
    Margot

  • I am having trouble editing the file as Margaret Ryan was not born in 1821 - her daughter Mary was. I have no birth date for Peggy (Margaret)

  • Dave K. I visited the historian at Nenagh and she helped to confirm that the marriage I had found online was Peggy and Mich. There was no other documentation she could help me with. I visited Newport and spoke to a nun there for referred me to the priest - I spoke to him by phone and could have visited him perhaps to look at parish records but this did not eventuate as I was travelling with family and they would not take me there.

    THANK YOU Margot!
