Obituary of Margaret (Walker) Ellis
Margaret Ellis died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Hoyt, in Colchester, March 9, 1897, aged 77 years. The remains were taken to Salem Church, in Chalmers township, on March 11, where the funeral services were conducted by Rev. Bowlin, of Colchester. The interment was in Oakwood Cem. (the grave markers are in Old Bailey cem.), by the remains of her husband, who departed this life in the year 1884. Mrs. Ellis was born in Londonderry, Ireland, in the year 1820. She was united in marriage to James Ellis in the year 1846. To them eight children were born, four sons and four daughters, all of whom survive them except one daughter, who passed away many years ago. She with her husband emigrated to America in the year 1857, settling in New York, at which place they remained three years, after which they came to Illinois. They resided in this and adjoining county until her death She united with the Presbyterian church at the age of 15 and remained a member of the same until the summons of the Master at whose calling she was ready to say " All is well Lord, Thou, hast ever been my comfort, in every time of trouble; I now leave all with thee. Praise the Lord; During her last illness she was constantly praising God for his goodness and mercy to her and thanking him for his great care. The text selected was one of her favorite verses; "I have fought a good fight. I have finish my course. I have kept the faith.
The selection below was one which she would very often repeat, especially as she would watch the setting sun;
Life id but a narrow span,
Tis like a fading flower;
The day of Death is near at hand --
Draw nearer every hour.
Thus do we walk with her and keep unbroken, The bond which nature giver, Thinking that our remembrance though unspoken May reach her where she lives
