Martin Conway 1839

Back to List

My Great great grandfather came from Killard I think - Dunmore is documented on the 1891 census but we think that it may be Doonmore. He enlisted in Cork in 1858 aged 19 yrs. He was posted to Canada where I think he married. His wife was called Mary Anne Dowling. They had four children all born in barracks - Canada, Jersey and Lancashire. William Edward, Ellen, Lizzie and Thomas Dowling. He was in the 47th Regiment of Foot. He spent some time in hospital at Athlone and then to Dublin. He was discharged from Preston Barracks in 1880. He then lived in Lancashire working as a Watchman on the railways. I think by this time Mary Anne had passed away and he has remarried a Kate/Catherine - I think Keane - also from this area. They have one daughter Margaret (in the photo) Any information on the family would be really appreciated.

Additional Information
Date of Birth 1st Jan 1839 (circa)

  • Hi,

My great grandfather is William Edward...lots of information on William Edward. I have found information on Martin over the years.

I have a copy of death certificate...and looked for his grave near Oldham Lancashire...but no stone now.

Would be interested to know who my distant cousin is...
