  • My great-great grandfather, Thomas McLaughlin told his grandchildren he was from Cloonkeen Kilkerrin. I am wondering if your Martin could be related. The name Martin was an often used first name in the family, Thomas had a son Martin born in the US.   I'd love to know more of your McLaughlins/McLoughlins.  I do match DNA with descendants of another McLaughlin family from Kilkerrin. I'd love to hear more about your Martin.

    Hi Aileen,

Here's what I know about my side of the McLoughlin's

My great great grandfather was Augustine McLoughlin and I'm pretty sure his wife was Ellen Kelly(I found out my great great grandmother's name from a 1851 census return). My great grandfather was Martin McGloughlin and born about 1848. My grandfather was born Martin in 1873, his oldest brother was August born in1870, Elenor was born in 1875, and Andrew in 1877. I can not find  anything on August besides census for 1901 and 1911.I don't think he immigrated because he took over the farm. I also can't find a death date either. Elenor is also a mystery, haven't been able to find a marriage or death on her. Their farm was in Cloonshivna(Cloonkeen, Kilkerrin). Martin immigrated to England to work in the coal mines. I found him on an England census for 1891at a boarding house, also with him was a John McLoughlin(I'm assuming they were related). Martin's brother also immigrated to England to work in the mines. My grandfather immigrated in 1897 to New York and there he stayed. Andrew didn't immigrate until 1900 and lived with my grandfather for a short period of time.

I have not done a DNA yet. That will probably be the next step. I would imagine that if your great great grandfather came from Cloonkeen we most likey have some sort of connection. Cloonkeen was a very small area.

My great great grandfather was married to Margaret Burke in 1869. She died in 1905 and he died in 1933.

Through Ancestry I have been able to connect with Andrew's grandson John(that was quite exciting).

The repeat of Irish first names have made things difficult to pinpoint an exact connection. I'm on Ancestry.Com under patricia mclaughlin allen. Some of my aunts and uncles changed McLoughllin to McLaughlin and some kept it McLoughlin and I have no idea why. If you go on Ancestry .Com everything I have attached I know for a fact it is true. A lot of similar names have a lot of missinformation. They seem to attach without really making sure it connects.

Hope this helps. I'm open for any info that you might have.

    Sincerely,

    Trish McLaughlin Allen

  • Hello Trish,

It's wonderful to hear from you, I really appreciate it!  Thank you so much for sharing your information. I can't wait until the weekend when I can have time to delve into this more. I'd love to see if we can figure out a connection.  Is Cloonshivna part of Cloonkeen? I'm not sure I understand how the areas are though.  We were told Cloonkeen Kilkerrin, but which is the smaller or more specific area?  I know Burke is a common name, especailly in the area but its interesting that you also had a Burke McLaughlin marriage.

My great-great grandfather, Thomas McLaughlin married Ellen Burke in Dunmore in 1874. On the marriage record it says his residence was Dunmore, but we were always told Cloonkeen Kilkerrin was where he was from.  They left that same year for the US going to Belleville, Illinois first.  We assume they had family members there as we inherited  a McLaughlin photo album with all unknown people except the ones my grandmother marked as Thomas McLaughlin, and they are from studios in Belleville Illinois.  Its always been a big mystery.  Thomas had a brother John who was with him in Washington State. where he eventually settled. Unfortunately brecause its a common enough name we're having trouble sorting out John McLaughlin, I followed who I was thought was him and his family only to find in end it wasnt the right person.  My grandmother always said John was in South African in the military, but we have no proof of that either.  We do know Thomas's father was William McLaughlin and his mother Mary.  Years ago we visited there when in Ireland and found a stone with their names and it said it was erected by Thomas and his brother - we took a picture but unfortunately the bottom part is cut off and doesnt show the part about who it was erected by. When we went back last year and foudn the stone it was so much harder to read, couldnt even see that part.

My email is aileencoogan@gmail.com if you could be willing to send me yours, I'd love to exchange more and see what we can figure out.
