Mary Ann Cartin, a kitchen maid from Londonderry, was tried in July 1837 for vagrancy, with no former convictions.  

She was sentenced to 7 years transportation unless bailed in 3 months and was sent to the Richmond Female Penitentiary, Dublin.  

She sailed from Cork in November 1837 on the "Diamond" on a 114-day voyage to Sydney, Australia, arriving in March 1838.  

In October 1843 she married John Chesterton in Goulburn, New South Wales.  They had 10 children.  

Mary died in April 1888, aged 70, and was buried in a Catholic Cemetery in Ryansvale, a property south of Goulburn that had been established by 3 Irish convicts, James, John and Michael Ryan in the early 1830s.
