Mary Ann was one of 13 orphan girls selected from the Ballymena Workhouse to be sent to Sydney, Australia to help stock the colony under the Earl Grey's well-intentioned but ill-considered Irish Famine Orphan Girls scheme. She arrived in Sydney as part of the first shipment on the Earl Grey 6 Oct 1848 with notes: "house servant, reads, no relatives in colony". She was initially employed by Isaac Roy [or Ray] in Sydney for 1 year (he had arrived as convict).
Mary Anne married Peter Joseph FREDERICKS on 6 May 1850 at St Mary’s, Sydney (he was Catholic). They had 10 children, lived Kiama, Jamberoo, Ulladulla, Binda, and lastly Wollongong. Mary Ann died 6 Jan 1908 and her husband, later the same year. They are buried at Wollongong Cemetery NSW.
