Mary Anne Downes of Doonbeg was the mother of US vice president Mike Pence's maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Maloney (1901-1980) who was born in the US.

In 1900, Mary Anne Downes departed Queenstown (Cobh, Co. Cork) aboard the Etruria and arrived in New York on 5 May 1900. Mary was listed alongside 3 other Doonbeg natives: George Clancy (age 30, US citizen), Patrick McDonnell (age 22), and Susan McGrath (age 20).

The Census record reveals that this family were Irish-speaking and would have been known locally as Ó Dubháin.

She married James Michael Maloney, from Killaloe, Co. Clare and raised a family in Chicago, Ilinois.  Their daughter Elizabeth Maloney (1901-1980) married Richard Michael Cawley from Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo who arrived in the US in 1923 and also raised their family in Chicago.
