Mary Deasy was born to Michael Deasy and Kate Molony in June 1860 in County Cork.

Mary Deasy married John Joseph Murphy on 4 August 1878 in St Finbarrs South Parish Church, Cork City. They initially lived in Cove Street and in later years they lived at 14 Military Road then moved to Altavilla on Lower Glanmire Road. John and Mary had 5 children: Michael died in infancy. Mary Kate (“May”), Christina, Eileen, and William (also a tailor). All migrated to New Zealand, though not at the same time.

Two of the girls- Mary Kate (“May”) and Eileen migrated to New Zealand on the Tainui in 1911. After John Joseph Murphy died 31 Dec 1911, widow Mary along with daughter Christina and a granddaughter Maisie, also travelled to New Zealand.
Mary lived in Dunedin, New Zealand for some years (up to 1914) then Wellington, New Zealand (1920) before moving to Christchurch, New Zealand to help care for Mary Kate’s (“May”) young family in 1920.  Mary died 7 June 1931 and is buried in Christchurch, New Zealand.
