Back to List

My husband’s 3X great grandparents both came from Clonmellon to South Australia.

Mary GARRIGAN bapt. 9 Sep 1824 Cloran Clonmellon to parents Thomas GARRIGAN and Elizabeth (Betty) BAXTER. The also had other children

Catherine bap. 24 Feb 1830 Moygrehan

Peter bap 1 Jul 1832 Moygrehan

Myles 15 Aug 1826 Clonmellon

Patrick 27 Jan 1836 Cloran Clonmellon

Mary GARRIGAN  sailed on the TRAFALGAR which left London on 4th March 1847  (Plymouth 18th March) and arrived in Adelaide South Australia  July 3rd. 279 Free immigrants . Also on board were Myles, Peter and Patrick.

Mary was recruited form the workers on Sir Montague Chapman’s estate—Killua.

In Adelaide she met and married William PLUNKETT bapt 1 Jul 1824 Clonmellon  and whose parents were Michael PLUNKETT and Mary GARAGAN/GUAGAN who had arrived in Adelaide 4 Sep 1847 on the ABOUKIR. He too was from Sir Montague Chapman’s estate.

The pair had 9 children some of whom I have been unable to trace. After Mary died about 1862 William seems to have abandoned his children some of whom ended up in “The Destitute” in Adelaide. ( I am trying to follow this up).

I have details of Myles and Patrick Garrigan’s family here in Australia and also of some of the children of Willia PLUNKETT and Mary GARRIGAN.

If anyone has more information or indeed would like information fell free to contact me.

Sir Montague Chapman’s story here in South Australia has not been fully documented probably because of his early death.

Additional Information
Date of Birth 9th Sep 1824
Date of Death 1st Jan 1862 (circa)

  • Hello

I was intrigued by your post about the Garrigan family from the Killua estate of Sir Montagu Chapman.

My great great grandfather Michael Naughton was also from Clonmellon. He was a passenger on the Trafalgar.

I have written about him in my blog, "Michael Naughton from County Westeath."

    https://hayesdempseyfamilystory.wordpress.com/

It would be interesting to trace what happened to the passengers on the Trafalgar and the Aboukir after they arrived in South Australia.

Our ancestors probably knew one another in Ireland. I wonder if they had any contact after they arrived. Where did your people settle in SA?

    kind regards,

    Bernadette

  • Hi Bernadette

Thank you so much for getting back to me. It was fascinating to read your blog about your Irish ancestors and it gave me things to think about. I have to admit that until recently William Plunkett and Mary Garrigan have not had much research time. i knew their bare details and had searched the PR in Clonmellon. I came to want to know more about them and have now more knowlege but not enough.

Myles Garrigan married Margaret Mary CARLAN and has quite a large family. I am still woking on some of these and they seem not to have entered the births but most of the children died either as young or having married in Crystal Brook or Port Pirie.

Peter Garrigan died in Marrabel seemingly unmarried. I have more to do here as I think Patrick Garrigan was also at Marrabel for some time.

Patrick Garrigan married margaret CURTAIN/CURYAYNE 1861 in Dirty Light. She died Emu Flats 1869 when he remarried Bridget Ann Donnellan 1869 in Kapunda!!!. He went to Broken Hill where apparently he built some of the fine buildings...more to do here. He deserted Bridget ( notices in newspapers) and she remarried (bigamously it seems.)  At least one of the children from the first marriage was born at Tothills Creek and that is where Patrick was living when he took one of his sister's children when they has been deserted.

The issue from his marriage with Bridget both died at Caltowie.

    MAry Garriagn

married William Plunkett (Aboukir) . They seemed to have settled for a while in the Dry Creek area which seems to have been part of the Chapman estates. I guess he was working as a labourer as was at least one of the other Garrigan men. When Mary died in c1862 the children were deserted and went "to the Destitute". We have yet to go out to the State Archives to see if there are records of the children going into the Destitute home in Adelaide. One son Michael died 1868 in Bagots well. He had been taken back by his Garrigan uncle.

Anyway lots more to discover and maybe we'll use it as an excuse to get to Clonmellon one day.I agree to see where the immigrants from the 3 "Chapman" ships ended up would be a fascinating project!!

    Kind regards

    Sue

  • Hello Sue

Thank you for the information on your family. Many of the place names you mention are very familiar to me from researching my family history: Dry Creek, Emu Flats, Marrabel, Tothills Creek, Caltowie, Crystal Brook, Port Pirie. So far I'm not aware of any marriages between your ancestors and mine, but I'm sure they would have known have one another.

Dry Creek is close to where the State Records of South Australia is now located on Cavan Road, Gepps Cross.  This was the location of Montagu Farm.

At the moment I am researching my O'Toole ancestors from County Wicklow who arrived in 1840.  They lived first at Morphett Vale then moved northwards to Dry Creek, the area around Salisbury, Waterloo, Tothills Creek, Apoinga near Burra, Whyte Yarcowie etc.

My great great grandparents Thomas Hayes and Honora Hennessy from County Galway are buried in the Caltowie cemetery. I have Howard ancestors buried in the Marrabel cemetery.

If I come across any connections between your ancestors and mine I'll let you know.

My email address is bernadette.thakur@gmail.com if you would like to keep in touch.

    warm regards,

    Bernadette
