  • Regards.I am interested in a Mary Hourihane, from this parish.born significantly earlier (circa 1830) and with a final e on he end of her surname.  I believe that she married Timothy Donovan, from Leap in Caheragh, circa 1850.

  • Having an "e" at the end of Hourihan is insignficant. Most of the people, at that time, were illiterate and left the spelling of the name to the priest. Quite often the priest was not born in that locality

    and was not familiar with local names. Example, among mant too numerous to mention is the name Keady, spelled as Cady, Cadey, Kady, Kadey. Hourihan is many times spelled as Hourigan,

    Horrigan, Hourihane, Horgan, Hourahan. The only marriage celebrated in Caherag for the time frame oof 1840 - 1860 was the following.
