  • I'm looking for information about my great grandmother, Catherine McAndrews b 1843 in Lacken Parish Co. Mayo. She and her mother and brother are reported to have emmigrated to Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania USA in her teens {about 1858}. She was living with her husband, Patrick Gillespie, and she bore my Grandfather Patrick Edward  Gillespie in 1869. Following the death of her husband, Patrick Gillespie in1872, she moved to Carmona-Wycoff Minnesota as a widow with one son, my grandfather Patrick Edward Gillespie, to stay with some relatives named Healy {pronounced Hay-lee} and she had a relative in Minnesota named Toole. We recently visited Lacken Parish, Co. Mayo and spoke to some McAndrews family { Not related} and noticed that there are Healy"s and Toole's in the parish as well. I believe that she was part of the number of families who emmigrated to the coal mines in western Pennsylvania as mentioned in the book "The Irish are coming: From Mayo to Scranton, Pennsylvania"  by a man named James. Google The Irish are Coming:  Mayo Ireland to Scranton Pennsylvania and you can download it onto your computer. It is an excellent story of about 20 families from Lacken Parish, Co Mayo to the coal mines in Pennsylvania. Some of the families were the Healy"s and McAndrews. At any rate if this makes sense to anyone reviewing this please contact me:  Donald Gillespie MD email  maryganddon@gmail.com and respond on messages of Ireland XO.
