Mary McChesney born c 1828 in County Cavan, Ireland. Her father was George McChesney and her mother Mary Mitchell. She had an older sister, Martha b c 1824. They were protestants.
Mary was illiterate and never learned to read or write. Mary's mother died when she was young. Her father left and the children were cared for by aunts, until Uncle John who was the mother's brother became guardian. Uncle John Mitchell, Mary and Martha came to Australia on the Wallace on 16 February, 1844. The girls by this time had changed their names to Mitchell, as noted on the ships arrival documents. Uncle John unfortunately abandoned them and left the girls in Melbourne.
In 1846, Mary married James Maurice. This marriage did not last and a few months later she married Samuel Walpole. However, after the birth of a daughter, Margaret the marriage ended and she became the partner of Joseph Tatham. They had at least 11 children. Joseph and Mary parted in 1870 and Mary eventually moved to Perth, Western Australia where she died 8 April, 1926.
