  • Hi there:

Do you have the parents' names for Mary Quinlan?  If so, if you add them to this thread, we can try to find the parish for you.

    All the best,

    Jane

  • Thank you for your offer Jane.  Mary Quinlan's son was the informant on her death certificate in 1894 and unfortunately he didn't know her father's name, only that his occupation was a Shipwright.  He stated that Mary's mother's Christian name was Mary, surname unknown.   Not much to go on I'm afraid, very frustrating.

    Regards,

    Dianne

  • Hi Dianne:

    Thanks for your reply.

I was checking the Clare Library website which has a lot of very good online resources to view.  I looked at the Tithe Applotment Books as they cover the earlier part of the 1800s (1823-37) and I see that there are a number of Quinlan families clustered in the civil parish of Kilfearagh, Kilballyowen and Moyarta  with a smattering of others in other parishes.  The 4 parishes that I referred to are all located in West Clare and it may be worth looking at those civil parish references for other information.  I know that you only have the mother's name as Mary, but are there any names of Mary's children that might be clues?  The fact that her father was a shipwright may also be a good clue and it would certainly tie in with the connection with West Clare.

Here are the links to the parishes and each one has some different records than the others:

    http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/kilfieragh.htm  for Kilfearagh civil parish.

    http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/kilballyhone.htm for Kilballyowen civil parish.

    http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/moyarta.htm  for Moyarta civil parish.

I will see what other information may be available for you.

You can add any further information on the comments of this thread.

    All the best,

    Jane

  • Hi Jane,

Thank you so much for the information, I will certainly investigate further and would very much appreciate any assistance from you.  Just out of interest, Mary Quinlan was the second wife of my great great grandfather George Paul whose first wife Bridget Power (my  gg grandmother) died in 1842, only a few years after they had arrived in Australia from County Cork as Bounty Immigrants.  George and Mary married in Sydney in January 1844, no details of their parents.  Their children's names were George Bede, Joseph Andrew and Mary Ann, presumably George named after his father and Mary Ann after her mother, perhaps Joseph after Mary's father??  It was thought by some family researchers that Mary may have been the 23 year old Mary Quinlan who arrived on the Orrestes in 1841 but this does not tie in with her age of 86 at time of death on July 25, 1894 and the Mary from the Orrestes appears to have married someone else.  Despite good shipping records here I have been unable to find any other appropriate Mary Quinlan.

    Best regards,

    Dianne

  • Hi Dianne:

Thanks for your reply.  I will contact a volunteer in the West Clare area to see if he knows of any information available about shipwrights.

Do you think that Mary's parents remained in Ireland?

  • Hi Jane,

I can't be sure that Mary's parents remained in Ireland but I cannot find any information that would relate to them here.  On checking ships' passengers lists yet again I see there was a Mary  Cullinane with the name Quinlan next to it (from County Clare) on the Lady McNaughton, arriving in Sydney in 1837.  Perhaps she is possibly my Mary but I cannot find any further details about her at this stage.  When the Corona Virus restrictions are over I will view the microfilm of the passenger list.  By the way, my Mary Quinlan's religion was RC and three of her grand-daughters became nuns. Thank you again for your interest.
