Michael Butler  was baptized on July 29, 1821 in Killeen, Parish of Kilmanagh, County Kilkenny. He was the son of  James Butler And Judith (Julia) Hickey.Michael immigrated to the United States in about 1853. In 1854 Michael took up residence on the farm of Jeremiah Snell in the Town of Manheim, Herkimer County. He was employed there as a laborer, along with his sister Julia, who had arrived in Manheim in 1853. Michael married Hanora Place on November 21, 1860 at St. Mary’s Church in Little Falls, NY. The Butler family moved to the Town of Newport from the Town of St. Johnsville in 1866,and together with brother-in-law Patrick Carey and wife, the former Julia Butler, purchased a 195 acre farm. Patrick Carey and Julia Carey had previously sold their 27 acre farm in the Town of Manheim to William Place, Hanora’s brother. The Butler farm was located in the Town of Newport, NY on present-day Hawthorne Rd, in an area then known as the Irish Settlement. Michael died of a stroke on March 20, 1900.
