  • John O connor.

It is my understanding that the kilrea o connors are buried in Toberelva cemetry near castleplunkett and not ogulea cemetry. Oconnor head stones in tobelelva date back to 1800 and include the name micheal. I also think that the o connors ofTamona  house are buried in ogula.____see (Michael Connor Tamona house  gentleman farmer1749).

However I am in the processof further research and I will keep you posted

  • John,
Good to have you join the search. That makes four of us that l know of.
Sr Kath O'Connor of Sydney Australia, Kent Smith of Wisconsin USA and Rob James of Newcastle Australia (that's me).
I contacted Sr Kath in about 2008 and we met in Sydney and exchanged information. I then published what l knew of our O'Connor family on Ancestry.com and replicated some of this family tree to other sites such as Geni.com. I visited Tulsk in 2010 while on a business trip to Belfast. Kent Smith became involved and visited Tulsk from the US for an extended period. See his comments on this site. Kent's grandmother Catherine Agnes O'Connor and my grandmother Anne Noreen O'Connor were sisters here in Australia and are grand daughters of Owen OConnor the oldest of the three brothers who migrated to Australia. Kath is descended from Francis O'Connor, the second of the brothers. Kath made contact with a Bernard O' Connor in the Tulsk area who was able to provide us with information. On visiting Tulsk in 2010 l located the headstone in the Ogulla cemetery with Michael all three sons names (yes these names could be a coincidence)

  • ... Kath legitimised our connection with Tulsk by finding that Owen and Catherine Byrne had married there in February 1858 before moving to Australia. It is quite possible that Michael d.1837 was from Rathnaglye and Honoria (nee O'Connor) his wife from Kilree.
Of more interest is the Toomona connection with Peter O'Connor d.1839.
Establishing that connection would link our line with the O'Connor Ruidh or Roe (Red).
Peter was supposedly the last heir of the O'Connor Roe but this may have been convenient for the other OConnor Septs who purportedly rewrote history to suite their own sept. More on this later. So l am very glad you have information on the Toomona O'Connors buried in Ogulla cemetery and looking forward to your further investigation.

  • ... Some interesting reading:

"The Annals of the Four Masters" translated by Dr. John O'Donovan; Some of the translation has been discredited by scholars as being in favour of certain O'Connor Sept's.

HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL MEMOIR THE O'CONNORS, KINGS OF CONNAUGHT, AND THEIR DESCENDANTS : COLLECTED FROM THE ANNALS OF IRELAND, AND AUTHENTIC PUBLIC RECORDS.
    BY RODERIC O'CONOR, ESQ.,
    BARRISTER AT LAW
    DUBLIN 1861
This publication examines and challenges long held assertions regarding the genealogy of the O'Connors including attempts to reshape history.

  • John do you have any further news? And what sources did you use to determine the O'Connors buried in Ogulla Cemetery nr St. Patricks cliabath well are the same O'Connors who occupied Toomona House. This is important breaking news and a number of the family are interested in your response.
    Rob.
