Michael left Glenade, Leitrim at the age of 17yrs old and settled in DelNorte, Crescent City, California. He worked as a potato farmer and bee keeper. He helped build the first National School in DelNorte. It is said that he was banished to California for brewing 'poteen' and his grandchildren remember him fondly by the name 'Iron Mick'.
