Michael was born in Ballycullane, Dungarvan, County Waterford, Ireland; the son of William Curreen and Catherine Tobin, who were married in Aglish, County Waterford, Ireland, in 1842. He was the grandson of Patrick Curreen and Catherine Murphy.

Michael had two brothers, Thomas Curran (1843) and James Joseph Curran (1846), both born in Dungarvan, County Waterford, Ireland.

The family immigrated to Yonkers, New York in 1847, during the Famine years. There were three more siblings, Mary (1849), Catherine (1852), and John (1853) all born in Yonkers. Those three died prior to 1860.

Michael had more half siblings by his mother's second marriage, 2 Jul 1854, to Patrick Flynn. Patrick (1856), Mary (1858), Catherine (1860), John (1862), and Joseph (1865), also born in Yonkers.

Michael married Catherine Mansfield in Yonkers 31 Aug 1868. They were married by Father A. A. Lings. The witnesses were Thomas Hallaghan and Honora O'Keefe.

In April 1869, while on his job as a bricklayer at Locust Hill Avenue, Michael fell ill, collapsed and died instantly, at the age of 25. His wife was pregnant with his daughter, Mary Teresa at the time. He never got to to see his daughter, who was born three months after his death.

Michael's wife Catherine never married after his death and his daughter Teresa Curran May, died in 1901.
