Hi There,
Michael Fitzsimmons is a direct ancestor of mine and im hunting any actual records of his, would you happen to have any?
Michael was born around 1796. He married Mary Wood and had three children. In 1831 Michael was transported to Australia on the ship Bussorah Merchant. He paired off with Mary Maloney who had come into the country with her husband John Maloney. Mary was Mary McNamara from Six Mile Bridge in County Clare. Michael and Mary had 10 children - James, Elizabeth, Michael, Margaret Anne, Catherine, Sarah Ann, Peter, Henry Joseph, Mary Jane & Louisa. Michael & Mary Wood’s daughter, Ann migrated to Australia in 1854 on the ship Plantagent. She stated on her shipping list that she was 22 years old, a farm servant. Father Michael and Mother Margaret (dead) and that her father was Michael Fitzsimmons and that he was in Dungog. No record has been found of the other two children left in Ireland.

Hi Stacey,
I descend from Michael through his daughter, Mary Jane Fitzsimmons. Which line do you come down from. I have a tree on Ancestry which has records and stories attached.

Coincidental but there was an Irish convict Bernard Fitzsimmons, born about 1803, from county Cavan, who was also in Dungog. Wonder if there is a conncetion?
I have often wondered myself about this Bernard Fitzsimmons. Seems to be one heck of a coincidence that he was assigned to Dungog, the same as Michael and Peter. Michael and Peter's brother, Bernard Fitsimmons came to Australia with his family in 1856. He was born in 1820 so obviously not the same Bernard but who knows if there is a connection.
It seems there were two Bernard Fitzsimmons in Dungog.
One was a settler, born Arthurstown, Tallanstown, Co Louth 1811. This Fitzsimmons emigrated on board the Ben Nevis in 1856. He lived In Dungog. Married Anna (or Hannah) Bevans on 25 Dec 1840 at Holy Cross, Leicester. She died in Dungog (Sep 1883). They had two children James and Elizabeth.
The second Bernard Fitzsimmons was a convict (my line).
Date of Birth: 1803. Occupation: Shop man. Date of Death: (possibly) 1887. Age: 85 Crime: Forgery. Convicted Ireland, Kings County. Sentence term: 14years. Ship: Elphinstone. Departure date: 8 September, 1838. Arrival date: 29 December, 1838. Place of arrival: New South Wales. Passenger manifest: Travelled with 68 other convicts. A son Thomas (13) also came with him. The above is from NSW Govt. Records. Irish Convicts. State Records NSW - Ship List Irish Prison Registers 1790-1924 (prev. NSW Gov Records. Irish Convicts. State Records NSW - Ship List), date of birth: 1796 (prev. 1803)https://convictrecords.com.au/convicts/fitzsimmons/bernard/132556.
This Bernard Fitzsimmons had a criminal record in Australia, including:
7 Feb 1849. Item 51041. To be tried at Maitland Circuit court for uttering forged orders.
17 Feb 1849. Item 51412. Sentenced to 3 yrs in Maitland gaol for aiding and abetting Patrick McIntee to defraud James Stephenson.
1 March 1848 in Maitland, remanded on a charge of uttering a forged order. Item: 3906313 Sep 1848. Item 45043. To be tried at Maitland Circuit Court for uttering forged orders.
13 Sep 1848. Item 45090. 11 pounds taken from him when he was arrested for uttering forged orders to be handed to his attorney for his defence.
16 Sep 1848. Item 45387. Given bail to appear at the next Circuit Court on a charge of forgery.
The only NSW death found for a Bernard Fitzsimmons is 6 Dec 1887 at Gladesville Asylum; registered as # 8724/1888. This most likely the settler.
There is a Bernard Fitzsimmons who died in Victoria in 1879 (son was Michael) Reg #8105/1879.
Bernard Fitzsimmons and Ann Bevans had 6 children that I know of. - John born 1843, Mary Ann 1846, Priscilla 1850, Michael 1854, James 1858 and Elizabeth Hannah 1865
With the Bernard Fitzsimmons who died in Victoria, did you mean that he was the son of Michael or that he had a son Michael. Works both ways for our Bernard as we believe his father was Michael and he had a son Michael. Maybe the one in Ryde belongs to the death in 1887 at Gladsville.
Yes, Denise. That Bernard Simmons did. I do not know anything more of the Bernard Simmons who died in Victoria, other than there was one. There is some evidence (a court ruling where he had tried to defraud his way into a nursing home). There was also another court case in Dungog, in which a John Fitzsimmons was charged (22 May 1880 - see NSW Police Gazette 2 June 1880) with attempting to shoot his father Bernard. Again, I do not know whihc Bernard Fitzsimmons this is. However you point out YOUR Bernard has a son John. Mine did not. The death at Gladesville is the same as Ryde as the subrbs adjon (Gladesville is part of the greater Ryde municipality). But again, I have not yet ordered the death certificate for that Bernard. That may indicate which Bernard he is. Regards, Greg.
